Course Content

The course develops a number of theoretical and thematic perspectives on the geographies of globalisation through a particular focus on Europe and its cities and regions. Focusing on processes of de- and reterritorialisation as intrinsic to globalisation, analytical and empirical attention is paid to the emergence of ‘Europe’ as an important scale for political, economic and social action. Within Europe, we can observe a restructuring of national states as well as subnational regions and cities, which has led and continues to lead to the development of various kinds of new territories, places, scales and networks. The position of cities and regions within this setting is central to a sophisticated understanding of the geographies of a globalizing Europe.

Additional info

The course consists of a combination of lectures and seminars: the lectures are focused on ex-cathedra teaching by various lecturers with each lecture unpacking a different geography of Europe; the seminars are oriented towards interactive discussion. Student evaluation will be structured around the writing of an individual paper on one European city and the seminars will be used to support students in the writing process.

Learning Outcomes

General competences

On successful completion of this course, students should:
- have knowledge of various interrelated spatial concepts to understand global interdependencies (sense of place, territory, de- and reterritorialization, scale, rescaling, network, space of flows, uneven development, etc.);
- have the capacity to position ‘Europe’ as a unit of analysis in the debate on globalisation-localisation;
- have gained knowledge on the development of European cities in the globalising post World War II era;
- be able to identify the differences and similarities between European cities and processes of urbanisation in various European countries and regions.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
PRAC Presentation determines 30% of the final mark.
SELF Paper determines 70% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Presentation category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Group presentation with a relative weight of 30 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Paper category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Individual paper with a relative weight of 70 which comprises 70% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

There is no written or oral exam for this course. Instead, students are expected to participate in small student groups and to write an individual paper on one European city.

Partial marks for the group reports (30 % of total) are transferred to the resit period. The student can relinquish this partial mark, provided she/he reports this to the course coordinator not later than August 15 or October 1 (in case of transfer to the next academic year).
