Inhoud

In the course Recent Trends in Photonics (prof. Hugo Thienpont) you will (1) study and investigate the latest developments in the field of Optics & Photonics. You will (2) learn to how to find relevant scientific information (literature, magazine articles, websites) on a hot topic in photonics and (3) how to implement it in 45-minute presentation tutorial/ presentation. In addition you will also (4) learn how to create a scientifically correct bibliography and (5) compile a correct list of references.

Algemene competenties

The course contributes to achieve the following competences:

·         Master and apply advanced knowledge in the own field of engineering in case of complex problems.

·         Thoroughly understand and apply several areas of specialisation (to be chosen by the student) in the field of photonics.

·         Be acquainted with the recent innovation trends in the domain of photonics.

·         Have knowledge of the most important application areas of photonic materials, components and systems.

·         Have an insight in the main evolutions of fundamental research in the field of photonics.

·         Understand the context of technical or scientific papers in the field of photonics and further investigate unclear parts independently.

·         Take up independent positions about complex situations and be able to defend the point of view.

·         Reflect on own way of thinking and acting and be aware of the own expertise.

·         Be aware of ongoing evolutions in the field of interest, improve competence to expert level.

De beoordeling bestaat uit volgende opdrachtcategorieën:

Binnen de categorie Examen Andere dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

  • Presentatie met een wegingsfactor 1 en aldus 100% van het totale eindcijfer.

    Toelichting: Students must prepare and give a scientific presentation of 45-minutes about a topic of choice that is considered to be a recent trend in photonics.

EXAM:

Exam consists of a final presentation/tutorial of 45 minutes on a hot topic in photonics for peers + followed by a 15-minute Q&A.

Grading is based on the following components:

The presentation slides + the complete overview of all used prompts/scripts must be submitted in PDF at the latest on the day of the exam, before the presentation.
