Course Content

Training physiology is more than not only composing programmes and guiding athletes.  In order to get to this competence, a thorough basic knowledge of physiology, effort physiology, biochemistry… is necessary.

In this course the cellular mechanisms which arise as a result of the changes in physiology (and as a result performance improvement can cause) are handled.  Attention is given to intra- and extracellular changes in transport molecules, enzyme activity etc. and molecular and biological aspects.

Furthermore this course takes a closer look at the changes which appear as a result of training in the muscles and organs and as a result of which effort and training clearly play an important role in the prevention and treatment of chronic and degenerative disorders such as cardiovascular disorders, osteoarticulaire disorders, ageing, osteoporosis, diabetes, mental disorders etc.

Digital course material (Required) : Powerpoint presentations - extra/actual relevant scientific articles

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge & Insight

  • The student acquires knowledge concerning the physiological, biochemical and molecular biological aspects of the changes which appear in the human body as a result of effort and training.
  • The student acquires insight in the different mechanisms and the interpretation of the adaptations of the body as a result of training.

Application & Attitude

The student is able to apply these principles in the design and implementation of specific training programmes for both healthy individuals and risk groups.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oral examination with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

    Note: with written preparation

Additional info regarding evaluation

Oral exam with written preparation. The students can choose if they want to do the exam alone or in group (max. 3 students). The score of the group is automatically the score of the individual members. They need to inform the lecturer of their choice at the last theoretical lecture.

The way of examining in 1st and 2nd period will be identical.
