- Course Content
This course investigates language from an artificial intelligence perspective, focussing on its role in communication. In essence, we will study how artificial agents are able to (learn to) understand the meaning underlying natural language utterances (comprehension), as well as to express their ideas in the form of linguistic expressions (production).
We will start by looking at how all linguistic knowledge can be described in terms of form-meaning mappings and how such mappings can be formalised and implemented. In order to do this, we will consider a range of well-known AI concepts and techniques, including knowledge representation, problem solving through search, unification, meta-level architectures and computational reflection.
