Course Content

The aim of this course is to prepare the student for the Master thesis through a discussion of and presentations on research design, methodology and underlying research philosophy. In the first part of the course, students will largely work in smaller groups to discuss research articles. In the second part, students will work more individually on developing their own research proposal. This research proposal will be discussed during various presentation sessions towards the end of the course. On the basis of the comments received during these presentations, students are expected to revise and resubmit their research proposal.

The course consists of a mixture of lectures and sessions dedicated to student presentations in combination with substantial self-study.

- design and set up your own scientific research project;
- critically analyse research papers;
- critically discuss the outline of a research proposal;
- develop your own research strategy and take responsibility for your research project;
- communicate transversal knowledge about different research domains in geography;

  • Mix of tasks with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

The course contains multiple elements of assessment, including e.g. group work, presentations and reports.

Partial marks are transferred to the resit period. The student can relinquish this partial mark, provided she/he reports this to the course coordinator not later than August 15 or October 1 (in case of transfer to the next academic year).
