Course Content

The Master Thesis Geography involves an original research assignment, carried out by the student and documented in the form of a written thesis report. The research work and the reporting is guided by a supervisor from the department. Generally guidance is also provided by other members of the research group involved. Preferably the subject is connected to one of the research specialties of the department, although this is not mandatory. To follow up the progress of the work during the year the student has to participate in two thesis seminars (November/December, March/April) where the student has to report on the status of the work and the further planning . When the thesis work is finished the student has to present his results at the thesis defense seminar and engage in a discussion on the outcome of the research.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

In the master thesis emphasis lies on the ability of the student to contribute actively and independently to scientific research. The aims of the master thesis are:

- to formulate research questions with the help of the supervisor, and elaborate the research;

- to acquire information independently and judge it in relation to answering the research questions posed;

- to follow up and analyse developments in the chosen research field;

- to use modern experimental or theoretical methods and techniques to carry out the research;

- to analyse research results and interprete these results critically ;

- to link techniques and results from the literature with own research objectives and results;

- to acquire the proper attitude to do scientific research in a team;

- to learn to communicate in a scientific language when collaborating with fellow students and researchers;

- to report and present the results of the research in an orderly way, placing open questions in the right perspective.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Master Thesis determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Master Thesis category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Master thesis with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

    Note: Four marks will be given for the master's thesis: one from the supervisor, one from each of the two readers and one for the presentation of the research results. The relative weight of these four marks is 8:4:4:4. All marks are given based on an assessment raster that makes a clear distinction between research process and final report (thesis).
