Course Content

This OO consists of:

1. Lectures on the following topics

  • The geriatric patient
  • Nutritional problems
  • Falls, osteoporosis, fractures and osteoarthritis
  • Pressure sores, skin diseases
  • Infections, incontinence
  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Connective tissue degeneration
  • Cancer
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Frailty
  • Active aging/vulnerability
  • Sarcopenia
  • Physical activity
  • Endurance in the elderly
  • Malnutrition and dehydration in the elderly
  • Fall prevention and pain

The content of Prof. Mets' lectures ('Clinical Aspects of Gerontology and Geriatrics') are mandatory knowledge for the module 'General Insights into Geriatric Rehabilitation'. The material from these lessons must therefore be known before the exam. Attendance is required for the lectures and the contact moments of the assignment clinical decision-making.

2. Clinical Reasoning and Decision Making:

Using cases, a minimum of 3 teaching moments will be devoted to clinical reasoning and clinical decision-making in the elderly patient. Attendance is mandatory - flexibility will be allowed for working students. Work is done in groups of approximately 5 students. Within this section we work with blended learning. Various teaching methods such as 'Think, pair, share' and 'flipped classroom' will be applied:

  • Think: the students receive a theoretical case and individually answer the questions asked on the online forum ('Piazza').
  • Pair: the students then compare in a small working group (n=5) the answers they found to the key questions not yet addressed in the forum and develop a consensus document.  This consensus document is handed in as a group at the end of the Pair moment and is also posted to the personal portfolio by all group members.
  • Share: Each group reports its findings to the whole class through a short presentation. This presentation will also be placed on the personal portfolio by all group members.

Students are expected to actively participate and maintain a critical attitude while working on the assignment and during the presentations.

The study material consists of the handouts of the slides and the comments on the slides given during the lectures and WPOs. The learning platform will be used. Accompanying scientific literature and knowledge clips can be made available by instructor (via copy or learning platform).

Course material
Digital course material (Required) : Handouts presentaties HOC + Begeleidende wetenschappelijke literatuur, Canvas
Handbook (Recommended) : Geriatrie in de fysiotherapie en kinesitherapie, D. Cambier ; J.S.M. Hobbelen ; N.M. de Vries, Churchill Livingstone, 9789036813495, 2017
Additional info

Absences due to top-level sports activities of the students with top-level sports status should be coordinated by the Topsport & Study department at the beginning of the semester in order to find a possible alternative date for the WPO or replacement assignment in time.

Study facilities (distance learning) can be offered to working students (to be coordinated with the supervisor).

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

This OO contributes to the following learning outcomes:

  • The master masters the scientific concepts and theories of complex specific conditions within rehabilitation sciences and physical therapy, including mainstream evidence-based physiotherapy and technological and strategic developments in rehabilitation. (Caregiver, Professional Developer and Scientific Investigator)
  • The master independently applies appropriate anamnestic and research methods and demonstrates a systematic and goal-oriented approach that is transparent and testable, based on evidence-based practice and international frameworks (ICF). (Healthcare provider)
  • The master evaluates the research findings and formulates a physical therapy diagnosis for complex, specific conditions and, based on this, the treatment plan, which he can implement (with knowledge of validity, reliability and responsiveness of the measuring instruments used) and, if necessary, adjust after critical evaluation, in consultation with the client. (Caregiver)
  • The master masters scientifically based specialized physical therapy treatment strategies and techniques for patients with complex and specific conditions. (Caregiver)
  • The master has an understanding of the impact of psychological and social aspects that influence health problems in complex and specific conditions and the efficacy of treatment. (Healthcare provider)
  • The master implements the steps to bring a complex client to behavioral change. (Manager)
  • Masters Organisation and Management will be able to critically assess the effectiveness of innovative treatment methods and diagnostic procedures and therapeutic agents recommended in guidelines, and apply them when required. (Developer of the profession and Scientific Researcher)

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 70% of the final mark.
SELF Teamwork determines 30% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Deel Prof. Mets with a relative weight of 60 which comprises 42% of the final mark.
  • Deel Prof. Beckwée with a relative weight of 40 which comprises 28% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Teamwork category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Taak Klinische besluitvorming with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The final score is composed of:

  • the theoretical exam (70%); consisting of Prof. Beckwée's part (40%; thus 28% of the final score) and Prof. Mets' part (60%, thus 42% of the final score)
  • the task clinical reasoning and decision making (30% of the final score).

The theoretical exam consists of a written test with multiple choice questions and open questions.

The clinical reasoning task is assessed based on preparation, engagement (via peer assessment), the consensus document and presentation. Thus, it is possible that different people within the group may receive a different final grade. If the student did not perform the preparation or if he/she did not participate in the assignment, the grading on the task will be 0/20 in the first sitting. In the event that the student has a failing grade on the task, the student will be given an individual replacement assignment in the second session time.

Peer assessments will thus be used to determine the score of the clinical reasoning task. The result will be individual adjustment factors. These assessments must be completed in a timely manner each time, before the deadlines (communicated through Canvas). If no peer assessment is completed within the period before the deadline, an adjustment factor of 0.7 will automatically be assigned to the student who did not submit.

The student must pass on all components (min. 10/20 or min. 50%). If the student does not pass on any component, the weighted average will be deviated from and the lowest partial result will count as the exam result. A partial result on an exam component, if the result is at least 10/20 (or at least 50%), is automatically carried over to the second sitting. A student cannot waive the automatic transfer of the partial grade. No partial scores are transferred to a following academic year.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
