Course Content

Lectures:
- Important geriatric syndromes/pathologies
- Diagnostics and evaluation of geriatric patients
- Adapted rehabilitation programs for treatment of important geriatric syndromes/pathologies
- Preventive measures and preventive exercise programs
- Communication with elderly persons/patients and their peers

Seminars in the form of workshops:
- Clinical reasoning in complex case-studies with real patients in a geriatric setting
- Diagnostic and evaluative skills in geriatric rehabilitation
- Therapeutic skills in geriatric rehabilitation
- Designing preventive exercise programs
- Communication with elderly persons/patients and their peers

SELF in the form of tasks, papers and forum discussions (on digital learningplatform):
- Developping a critical scientific attitude regarding the approach and treatment of elderly persons/patients
- Based on an existing demand in the geriatric field providing a presentation for colleages and/or other care providers
- Adequately reading and interpreting scientific literature in the field of geriatric rehabilitation

General competencies

The aim of this course is to teach knowledge, insight, skills and attitudes concerning clinical geriatric rehabilitation at the level of specialist in geriatric rehabilitation.

The student knows and has insight in
- Specific pathology of the elderly
- Evaluation/diagnostics of important geriatric syndromes/pathologies
- Best practice in geriatric rehabilitation
- Interaction co-morbidity at higher age
- Preventive and health-enhancing measures for elderly persons

- Conceive and execute adapted rehabilitation programs for important geriatric syndromes/pathologies
- Communicate with elderly persons/patients and their peers
- Communicate with care-providers from other disciplines
- Communicate with elderly persons/patients with cognitive impairments
- Educate colleages and care-providers from other disciplines

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Theoretisch & Toepassing with a relative weight of 70 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

First examination session:

The exam consists in a written test with open questions. In this test, knowledge and insight with regard to the material, as well as the clinical reasoning in a geriatric setting is evaluated for the student. The student is also confronted with a description of a concrete practical situation and it is expected that he/she can word the action strategy and its scientific foundation.

Second examination session:

The exam consists in an oral test with short written preparation. The content of the exam questions corresponds with the description of the exam of the first examination period.
