Course Content

In the theoretical part, the following topics will be studied:

  • Ageing
  • Dementia
  • Vulnerability
  • Sarcopenia
  • Malnutrition
  • Fall prevention
  • Physical activity

WPO (in the form of workshops and intervision sessions):

  • Clinical reasoning according to the principles of evidence-based medicine using complicated cases in the field.
  • Practicing diagnostic and evaluative skills in geriatric rehabilitation and prevention
  • Therapeutic skills in geriatric rehabilitation
  • Establishing preventive exercise programs
  • Communication with elderly persons/patients and their families/neighbors
  • SELF under the form of tasks, assignments around following themes:
  • Developing a critical scientific attitude towards the treatment of older persons/patients
  • To adequately read, interpret and apply the scientific literature within the field of geriatric rehabilitation.

At the start of the second semester, students are informed about the planning of a number of guest lectures on 'Active Ageing' that are organized in collaboration with the program 'Management, Care and Policy in Gerontology' (course 'Active Ageing' of Prof. Bautmans). These guest lectures are compulsory knowledge for the course 'Rehabilitation and Prevention in Elderly Care'. The material from these lessons must therefore be known before the exam. The slides and accompanying teaching materials are displayed on the learning platform.

Peer assessments will thus be used to determine the score of the clinical reasoning task. The result will be individual adjustment factors. These assessments must be completed in a timely manner each time, before the deadlines (communicated through Canvas). If no peer assessment is completed within the period before the deadline, an adjustment factor of 0.7 will automatically be assigned to the student who did not submit.

The student must pass on all components (min. 10/20 or min. 50%). If the student does not pass on any component, the weighted average will be deviated from and the lowest partial result will count as the exam result. A partial result on an exam component, if the result is at least 10/20 (or at least 50%), is automatically carried over to the second examination period. A student cannot waive the automatic transfer of the partial grade. No partial scores are transferred to a following academic year.

Additional info

The study material consists of the handouts of the slides and the comments on the slides given during the lectures and WPOs. The learning platform will be used. Accompanying scientific literature can be made available by instructor (via copy or learning platform).

Additional info regarding evaluation

The final evaluation of this course unit will be based on continuous evaluation (40%) and an oral examination (60%).

The permanent evaluation is based on the preparation of the class assignments (availability of the preparation on Canvas), the individual contribution during the class moments and the quality of the consensus document. During the oral exam, the student's knowledge and understanding related to the subject matter as well as clinical reasoning in the geriatric setting will be evaluated.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
