Course Content

In this course several, for the sports physiotherapist relevant, topics are discussed. Pharmacology and doping are important topics: In the introduction, the basic principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics are explained. Drug Products and the different types of dosage forms are given and the different kinds of drug targets are discussed. In a second part, important terms related to doping and the different doping groups are given (according to the WADA list). The different groups of doping products are discussed in detail. By way of their pharmacological action mechanism, it is explained why certain drugs are listed as doping product and what their effects are on sporting performance. We also have a lecture on immediate care and the most prominent medical disorders and we discuss in detail the use and added value of blood testing. Finally, the tasks, obligations and role of the physiotherapist related to medically justified exercise performance are discussed.

General competencies

The goals of this course are:

At the end of this course, the student should understand and know the basic principles of pharmacology and pharmacokinetics. The different classes of doping products should be known. By way of the pharmacological action mechanism, the student should understand why certain drugs are listed in the WADA list of doping products and how these drugs influence sporting performance and / or health. The student should understand the different terms related to medically justified sports exercise and the role of physiotherapist in this context.

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Schriftelijk examen with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.
