Course Content

The students get an overview of the political and cultural history of the German speaking countries from the Middle Ages until the end of the twentieth century. A selection of literary texts and essays in German structure this overview. These texts are read and analyzed in close relation with their political and cultural context.

This course is exclusively taught in German from the start.

Students can download the two digital course books Kulturgeschichte des deutschen Sprachraums and Kultur- und Literaturgeschichte des deutschen Sprachraums via Canvas or they can buy a paper version at the VUB Standaard bookshop.

The students get an overview of the weekly course material at the beginning of each semester and have to read and prepare the indicated texts each week in advance. Each week, the lecturer provides questions in advance that have to be prepared in written form.

Background information is given by the lecturer during class and the students are urged to actively participate in the discussion of the texts. Therefore, regular attendance of the classes is necessary. The active participation during class is taken into account as permanent evaluation for the final grade of this course.

- Identify connections and developments in the cultural and literary history.
- Express reading experiences in own words and critically reflect on the subjective impression of the texts.
- Apply the basic concepts of literary theory to the analysis of the texts.
- Express themselves orally in correct German at a basic level.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 80% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 20% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oral exam with a relative weight of 40 which comprises 40% of the final mark.

    Note: Partial evaluation in January.
  • Oral exam with a relative weight of 40 which comprises 40% of the final mark.

    Note: Partial evaluation in June.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Permanent Evaluation with a relative weight of 10 which comprises 10% of the final mark.

    Note: Active participation 1st semester (students are assessed based on the degree of active participation and commitment during the lectures and seminars.
  • Permanent Evaluation with a relative weight of 10 which comprises 10% of the final mark.

    Note: Active participation 2nd semester (students are assessed based on the degree of active participation and commitment during the lectures and seminars.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Both oral exams can be taken in the examination period of August. Only the failed exam has to be taken anew in August. Students have to pass both oral exams in order to pass the full course unit.

Oral exam: 80% split into partial exam in January and partial exam in June

Other: 20% split into active participation 1st and 2nd semester
