The field work concerns the geomorphology of coastal and fluiial systems along the North French and Belgian coastline. It includes fieldwork such as topographic measurements, drilling, mapping of landscape characteristics and excursions where the student will analyse systems studied in the theoretical course using fieldwork techniques supplemented with literature (sometimes also with explanation by local experts).
The field work is organized over 6 days, including during official holidays and week-end days. The dates of the excursion are communicated to the students at the start of the semester.
Terreinwerk I and II are both compulsory courses for 1BA and 2BA Geography, but are alternately organised (2-yearly) Group report and field notes (field notebook) from the students, notes and illustrations provided by the lecturers.
Additional study material:
Literature concerning the topic studied in the field, provided on the learning platform or to be found by the student.
The course aims at providing the basic skills in geographical fieldwork. During excursions (both in Belgium and abroad) the student is confronted with the problem of confronting theory (from the course on physical geography) and reality.
The initial theoretical knowledge given in the introductory course on physical geography is complemented with real world examples: the student learns to link field observations to theoretical concepts via abstraction.
The field work creates the skills and attitudes the student needs to analyze and solve geographical problems with spatial approach.
Techniques are provided to synthesize and report (written and orally) the findings. Functioning in a group forms another aim of this course, as well as the development of the ability of abstraction and synthesis.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 60% of the final mark.
SELF Report determines 40% of the final mark.
Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
Within the SELF Report category, the following assignments need to be completed:

- excursion notes (20%)

A mark >8/20 for the exam is needed to pass the course.
