Course Content

Practical introduction to Italian aimed both at the acquisition of communication skills and at the knowledge of vocabulary and grammar. The learning process starts with the study of text, audio or video-fragments on everyday life situations and consists of seminar exercises on precise aspects of communication and grammatical problems. The vocabulary component largely coincides with the home study of a basic vocabulary on the most common aspects of everyday life.

Target level: B1 of the Common European Framework for Languages.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 30% of the final mark.
Written Exam determines 70% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • mondeling with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • schriftelijk with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 70% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

During the January session, students will take a written examination that counts for 5% of the total grade of the written examination.

First examination period

Continuous evaluation (30%): consists of vocabulary tests (Le prime 3000 parole italiane), the January exam and assignments (presentations, preparation of exercises, etc.) throughout the year.

Written exam (50%): the written exam consists of the vocabulary, writing, reading and idiomatic expressions sub-components.

Oral exam (20%): assessment of speaking skills.

A student who fails one or more subcomponents will achieve the grade of the subcomponent with the lowest result for the study component.

A student who fails one or more subcomponents in the first session may choose to carry over the passed subcomponents to the second session instead of having to participate again in the evaluation for these subcomponent(s) in the second examination session.

The score of a subcomponent cannot be carried over to a subsequent academic year.

Students who do not participate in each of the separate evaluation components will receive 'absent' as the final mark for the programme component as a whole.

Second examination period

The assessment system is identical to the one used during the first examination period, without the continuous evaluation. The written examination counts for 70% of the overall mark, the oral examination for 30%. Students who failed the vocabulary tests will take this section as part of the written exam.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
