Course Content

In Lengua Española I the course content will be offered in a structured way through a blended learning approach: a combination of face-to-face teaching (2 hours per week) and virtual teaching (1 hour per week).

Both components require active participation. Students are expected to prepare certain topics off-campus so that they can actively participate in the on-campus lessons.

The course Lengua Española I is closely linked to the course Lingüística y Gramática del Español: Introducción.

In the Lengua Española I classes, the grammar rules that enable communication will be applied in concrete communicative situations. The five communicative skills (reading and listening, writing and speaking, and oral interaction) will be covered broadly.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

At the end of the course, the student’s language proficiency will approach level B1 of the European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Listening

The student can understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. The student can understand the main point of many radio or TV programmes on current affairs or topics of personal or professional interest when the delivery is relatively slow and clear.

Reading

The student can understand texts that consist mainly of high frequency everyday or job-related language. The student can understand the description of events, feelings and wishes in personal letters.

Writing

The student can write simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. The student can write personal letters describing experiences and impressions.

Spoken production

The student can connect phrases in a simple way in order to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions. The student can briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. The student can narrate a story or relate the plot of a book or film and describe emotions and reactions.

Spoken interaction

The student can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. The student can enter unprepared into conversation on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, travel and current events).

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 30% of the final mark.
Written Exam determines 60% of the final mark.
Other determines 10% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

PE woordenschat en grammatica with a relative weight of 30 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

examen schriftelijk with a relative weight of 70 which comprises 60% of the final mark.

Note: Schriftelijk examen : spelling, morfologie en syntaxis, vertaling, woordenschat uit handboek en eerste deel van PortaVoces.

Within the Other category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Permanente Evaluatie with a relative weight of 10 which comprises 10% of the final mark.

Note: In tweede zit wordt dit opgenomen in het schriftelijk examen.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The final grade is based on a written exam, an oral exam, and continuous assessment. The weight given to these three categories in the overall score is as follows:

oral exam = 30%
written exam = 60%
continuous assessment = 10%

In order to obtain a final grade, the student must participate in all three categories: oral exam, written exam and continuous assessment.

In order to pass the course, the student must pass both the oral and the written exam.

Second exam session: The student will retake both the written and the oral exam. The weight given to these categories in the overall score is as follows:

oral exam = 25%
written exam = 75%

NOTE: The oral exams may be recorded; this recording will be used solely in the event of a complaint.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark

The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
