- Inhoud
The use of mass and energy balances to construct and understand flow charts for industrial chemical processes is learned. The most important raw materials and energy sources for the (petro)chemical industry are discussed, with special attention to refining of crude oil (distillation, cracking processes, reforming). The method synthesis for different base chemical for organic synthesis reactions (e.g. ethane, ethyne, propane, methanol …) is discussed, as well as the production of industrial gases (synthesis gas, cryogenic distillation, PSA …). Subsequently, the different important branches in the chemical industry are reviewed: sulfur (sulfuric acid), nitrogen (ammonia, nitric acid), phosphorous (phosphoric acid, urea), fertilizers, soda, glass, cement, ceramics, detergents, paper and the nuclear industry. For the different processes also the economic, environmental and sustainability considerations are discussed.
Besides practical exercises and derivations of the mass and energy balances, ‘ASPEN+’ is used to develop and simulate practical industrial processes.
The first four hours of college will be used for language support, if requested by the students. A list translating the important concepts used in the course will be provided if requested.

Algemene competenties
The students receive a first introduction to chemical process technology and acquire knowledge about the different sectors in the chemical industry.
The students obtain insight into the interaction of the practical industrial chemistry with basic chemistry, physical chemistry, thermodynamics, catalysis, kinetics, thermal and fluid sciences and apply this knowledge to solve practical problems.
The students learn how to write down and solve material and energy balances for chemical processes, including the schematic representation of the process.
The students obtain insight in the economic, environmental and sustainability considerations required for the development of industrial chemical processes, including safety aspects, taking into account the continuously changing industrial and social context.
The students learn how to interpret flow diagrams of chemical processes.
The student become able to use a chemical process simulator (ASPEN+) to model and quantify simple practical problems.
The students learn how to apply their theoretical knowledge to understand complex chemical processes, using scientific principles.

De beoordeling bestaat uit volgende opdrachtcategorieën:
Examen Mondeling bepaalt 75% van het eindcijfer
WPO Praktijkopdracht bepaalt 25% van het eindcijfer
Binnen de categorie Examen Mondeling dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

Binnen de categorie WPO Praktijkopdracht dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:
- practical sessions

en aldus 12.5% van het totale eindcijfer.
Toelichting: Practical sessions (Aspen + project): 12.5% (no exam – year assessment). Practical sessions have to be attended. Illegitimate absence leads to 0 for the session.
