Course Content

This course helps bridge year students within Communication studies to master the basic principles of scientific research and scientic writing and reporting. It takes place during the first semester. The skills that the students develop within this course should allow them to successfully write their research paper.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

Students are expected to:

  • Independently search and identify scientific literature.
  • Analyse, interpret and evaluate literature in a critical way and refer correctly.
  • Use a scientific writing style.
  • Problematize a specific topic by mapping the existing scientific literature.
  • Formulate research objectives with regard to this topic.
  • Develop independently a proposal for an empirical research, based on the literature review.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Practical Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Presentation with a relative weight of 20 which comprises 20% of the final mark.
  • Paper 'State of the Art' with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.
  • Research Proposal with a relative weight of 30 which comprises 30% of the final mark.
