General competencies
The course introduces the basic concepts of probability theory and statistics and teaches students to apply them. It is not the intention to provide an extensive theoretical structure. On the other hand, a practically useful knowledge is targetted such that the students (as future engineers or physicists) can apply the methods / techniques to their own data and problems.
During the exercises / labs, the students process experimental or simulated data to extract the relevant information using statistical methods that were explained during the lectures.
The students are expected to have mastered all parts at the level of
- knowledge: the reproduction of properties and their proofs,
- insight: understanding the impact of the properties, and
- application: the use of the theory on unprecedented problems / exercises.

- Additional info regarding evaluation
The exam is divided into an oral part for the evaluation of the lectures and an exercise exam for the evaluation of the practical use of statistical methods. The mutual distribution of the oral exam / exercise exam is 50% / 50%. Both exams are closed book. The student may only use a formulary whose content was already recorded during the lessons, and which was printed by the examiners. When matlab is used during the exercise exam, the matlab documentation may be used.
During the oral exam (50%), all learning at the level of knowledge, insight, and application are questioned:
The exercise exam (50%) is mainly at the application level. Exercises can be requested from all learning contents of the course.
Individual results from the theory or exercise exam can not be transferred.

- The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
