Course Content

The course aim is to perform a practical examination of aircraft and space structures that are made with advanced composite materials. This will be done on the basis of case studies in order to clarify the following aspects of composites design: 1) Design of Composite Joints 2) Sandwich Construction 3) Adhesive Bonding 4) Automated Tape Laying, and Automated Tape/ Tow Placement 5) Composite Wing Construction 6) Composite Fuselage Construction. 6) Supersonice and Hypersonic vehicle construction and heat flow management. 7) Data requirement/ Certification and Certification by Analysis. 8) The "Digital Thread" in modern commercial and military aircraft fabrication and assembly.

Time will be dedicated to reviewing the rapid industrialization of composites manaufacturing, that is currently ongoing, and to identify the opportunities for engineers to capitalize on these developments.

The following will be learned: 1) How to design with composite materials. 2) How can load -flow be altered by materials anisotropy. 3) How can thermal-flow be altered by anisotropy. 4) How can an aircraft/ spacecraft component be designed for manufacturability? 5) What actions are needed to certify and aircraft/ spacecraft component?
