Course Content

We will discuss the intellectual and self-defining (identitarian) construction in Latin America, through the analysis of Spanish America essays.We will begin with a discussion of the status of the essay as a genre, providing an overview of its historical development as well. The sum of this analysis will help to redefine the essay through its essential characteristics.The principal corpus deals with essays about the identity construction.

The student
- has insight of the role played by the essayists as founders of cultural and literary awareness in Latin America.
- analyzes some Hispanic essays whose subject deals with the question of identity.
- develops a research question.
- makes a critical selection of bibliographic sources.
- carry out a research and present it orally and in writing.
- analyzes the essays through their essential characteristics, recognizing and understanding the specificity of the Hispanic American essay, considering the comparative dimensions of this literary subject.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 70% of the final mark.
SELF Presentation determines 30% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written paper with a relative weight of 70 which comprises 70% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Presentation category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oral present. + written paper with a relative weight of 30 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Written paper: Preparatory work 30%, Final work 70%.

Partial grades of the oral presentation and the written paper "preparatory work” cannot be transferred to a later exam session.
