Course Content

This option course provides a deeper insight in specific the NETWORK sublayer of telecommunication systems. Starting from the basic knowledge acquired in a introduction course on telecommunications, the most important aspects of the network sublayer are analysed in further detail. The major goal is to provide a conceptual overview, not to study specific implementations or specific commercial systems. The required functionalities of a network layer are discussed first, looking for the conceptual problems that arise. Next the most common or typical solutions to these problems are introduced. In some cases, an existing practical technology is used as an illustration or working case.

As this is an option course, discussion, reflection and problem solving thinking is highly encouraged, with students having the possibility to bring in some problems and discussions from their own experience/interest.

As the subjects are chosen in function of student interest, discussions and technological evolution, and change every year,  there is no written course material. As part of the course philosophy students are encouraged to go look up additional information about the subjects covered in class from professional literature, Internet sources etc.

After this course the student should have developed an overview over the role of the network sublayer in telecommunications, the most important conceptual problems, the typical solutions to these problems. The student should also have acquired some problem solving thinking in this material.

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Oral exam with open book written preparation. All documentation, class material, etc on PAPER can be used for the exam preparation.

The evaluation is fifty-fifty based on KNOWLEDGE on one hand, and on the INSIGHT of the student in the material and his/her problem solving capabilities on the other.
