Inhoud

This course pursues several pedagogical values: deal with an architectural project in all its aspects on an independent basis, to investigate and research already acquired knowledge, gather and digest information in function of the project in an independent way

A complex site in Brussels is chosen to investigate all kinds of urban developments and improvements.

Several urban questions inter-relate two programs (each of which developed over 4 months). The first one is relevant to urban planning architecture and aims at developing a “master plan” of the site (first semester, SUSTAINABLE URBAN DESIGN STUDIO). A second one is relevant to architecture and involves, on one hand, the in depth study of a building within the Master Plan, “targeted project “, and on the other hand its technical aspects and choice of materials, the “detailed project” (second semester, SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO)

Global objectives of the studio: to create a sustainable architectural and urban complex organism, which entails:

  • Learn the questioning and taking attitude in regards to the elements at stake of a program and a site within the general context of Sustainable Development.
  • Learn to apprehend the composition of such complex organism integrating various (apparently disparate) functions from which one ought to create a coherent spatial organization in relation with its more general urban context.
  • Learn how to manage left-over spaces generated by the site’s numerous structures.
  • Learn how to question the potential of existing structures in regards to their capacity in supporting or developing a more comprehensive urban regeneration and the urban densification in response to the territorial factors within the sustainable vision at every scale (city, district and building scales down to materials and systems.)
  • Learn how to implement various aspects of environmentally friendly approaches to urban design and architecture according to different trends and visions (bioclimatic, sustainability, C2C…).
  • Learn how to question and implement different materials, technologies, techniques and building methods in order to promote a positive action on the human environment and learn how to prioritize and achieve the goals (Health, well being, natural resources, energy, water, soil, biodiversity, social issues…) within the very context of the chosen project. Study the influence of those choices on the creation of living spaces a turban and building scales.
