Inhoud

Methods for life cycle analysis, computation of eco-efficiency (eco points), and industrial ecology will be dealt with.
As a general introduction, the socio-economic context, legislation, eco-efficiency and ethical aspects is introduced.

The remainder of the course will be divided in 2 blocks:
- polmers and ceramic materias
- metals


Life cycle of polymers and ceramic materials:
Part of durability:
- The life expectation of a material depending on conditions
- link molecular structure and sustainability properties.
- degradation mechanisms.
- Strong and weak points
The life cycle of polymers and material is treated within the framework of sustainability. Methods for life cycle analysis, calculation of eco-efficientie (eco points) and industrial ecologie are taken into consideration. Several practical examples for polymers and ceramic material are given.
The students will work out a project that deals with several aspects of polymers, metals an ceramics. The students will use several measuring devices and experimental methods. The students will make a report and give a presentation of their project.


Lifecycle of metals:

In earlier courses students have been into contact with the generation-part of the metals' lifecycle (course on: Metallurgic process technology, Processing of metals, metals and their properties,…). In the present course the emphasis is on the sustainability of metals, mainly connected to deterioration due to corrosion attack. Topics are:
-Types of corrosion (aqueous, dry, high temperature) :thermodynamic and kinetic aspects; passivatie of metal; corrosion forms.

- Cost of corrosion
- Corrosion prevention (material choice, design; control of the environment; surface treatment;. cathodic and anodic protection...).

- Corrosion detection / monitoring
- Corrosion management.

Algemene competenties

learning objectives
The aim is to give students an insight in the cradle to grave cycle of materials and products and how different products or processings can be compared on an environmental base. The sustainability plays a central role in the course. The course goes as far as industrial ecology and the role of the government is discussed. The course will allow the students to design environmently friendly production processes for materials and to prevent environmental problems.
-Competences
The students will be able to investigate and understand the life cycle of a material. They will be able to compare the durability of a material. They will have a basic knowledge concerning the legal aspects in the field of sustainability in the Flemish and European area. While making their task they will learn to independently collect information and process it. The problems which they encounter, even not treated during the course, must be solved. They must be able to present the gathered information in an understandable manner to a broad public. The students must be able to choose a material in function of social-social- environmental and ethical aspects.
