Course Content

The internship mainly focuses on the fifth educational pillar of the VUB, namely preparing students for their professional career. Through the internship, the student develops and acquires both academic and professional competencies. The internship preparation, the internship process and the e-portfolio of the internship also stimulate the student to consciously think about their own development. This promotes self-knowledge and critical thinking.
The student is responsible for finding a suitable internship. The duration of the internship is 480 hours.
The Internship Guidelines describes in detail all modalities of the course unit: organisation and progress, internship assignments, implementation and supervision, mid-term and final evaluations. It also includes all accompanying documents.
This internship guide can be found on www.vub.ac.be/EDWE and on the CANVAS course page.

Additional info

More information about the internship can be found in the Internship Guidelines on Canvas. Moreover, this information is also distributed during a working lecture in the academic year preceding the internship.

Learning Outcomes

Algemene competenties

The internship aims to introduce the student in the second Master Year of Educational Sciences to the reality of the educational field for a longer period of time. Education and guidance is central, and this always in cooperation with others.
The trainee has acquired sound pedagogical and educational insights and attitudes, and integrates the already acquired scientific knowledge.
Under supervision and in a real practical situation, students learn to deal with pedagogical and educational methods, insights and concepts. During the internship, the student evolves from an introduction to the internship placement to working independently. During the internship, the student complements and deepens the insights acquired at university.

During the internship, the student develops competences in the following areas:
- General professional skills (e.g. constructive contribution, sense of responsibility, functioning in a team...)
- Professional practice:
   *Pedagogic work (e.g. pedagogic action, insight in the process of education...)
   *Reporting (e.g. oral reporting, written reporting, analysis and synthesis in reporting...)
   *General (e.g. adapted use of jargon, deontological practices...)
- Evolution and final level (e.g. overall progress and evolution, application of theory and practice...)

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
SELF Internship determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Internship category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Internship with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

    Note: Pre-interview with internship supervisor VUB, practice (600 hours internship), final e-portfolio, mid-term and final evaluation form, and final evaluation with a weighting factor of 100 and thus 100% of the total final grade. The student takes part in all assignment categories to be able to receive a total assessment.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The student is obliged to meet following deadlines:
- at least one month before the internship starts, interview with the internship supervisor at VUB;
- at least one month before the start of the internship, signature of documents;
- in the half-term and at the end of the internship, upload evaluation forms on e-portfolio;
- 600 hours of internship;
- 1 month after end of internship, provide final e-portfolio to internship supervisor and internship coach VUB.

The e-portfolio must be handed in to the internship supervisor at the VUB at the latest one month after the last active internship day (mentioned in the internship agreement). Handing in the e-portfolio after this term, not handing in the internship e-portfolio and the evaluation forms, or performing less than the 480 hours of internship will result in an absence for the total assessment for the examination opportunity in the first session. The student is automatically referred to the second session. Deadline for submitting the internship e-portfolio in the second term is 19 August.
The practice (600 hours of internship) cannot be taken again in the second term. Except in exceptional cases, and with the explicit permission of the internship supervisor at VUB, it is possible to do an internship after the deadline of the first session.

The evaluation procedures and criteria are described in detail in the Internship Guidelines.
