Course Content

This course discusses the importance of the libretto writer's stylistic features and techniques when adapting a novel into an opera. Through a comparative analysis between Alessandro Manzoni's "I Promessi sposi" (1827-1840) and the operatic adaptations that were created throughout the 19th century, students will not only acquire insights in the stylistic and metrical features that characterize the novel and the opera as a genre, but also in the relationship between the contents and the author's linguistic choices within the adaptation process.
