Course Content

In this course, the concepts of empowerment and participation are theoretically framed and participatory research methods are explored. Next to that, different research topics and best practices regarding empowerment and participation of older persons are studied. The following themes can be discussed: societal participation and volunteering, political
participation, co-creation, empowering vulnerable groups (persons with dementia, residents of nursing homes,…), …

For every lesson the professor will provide a powerpoint presentation and an additional scientific article.

- the concepts of empowerment and participation
- participatory research methods
- promote empowerment and participation of olders persons in general and of vulnerable older persons particulalry
This course contributes to the role of the gerontologist as expert

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.
