Course Content

This course further develops students’ general research skills in preparation for the independent analysis, interpretation and reporting of collected data (a.o. in the context of the subsequent Master's thesis). In addition to descriptive statistics and the principles of statistical inference, specific distributions, the use of formulas and tables, parametric and non-parametric significance tests are discussed during the lectures (HOCs). The practical exercises (WPOs) enable students to independently select and execute statistical analyses on fictional data sets and short cases using SPSS as statistical processing program. All examples, theoretical and practical exercises in this course are applied to the field of physical education and movement sciences.

Course material
Digital course material (Required) : PowerPoint presentaties (aangevuld met eigen nota's) + SPSS boekje, Canvas
Practical course material (Required) : SPSS Software, Shared ICT Services Centre (SISC)

Additional info

Presence in the lectures (HOCs) and practical exercises (WPOs) is not a requirement to be admitted to the exam, but it is recommended in view of understanding and processing the subject matter.

Learning Outcomes

General learning outcomes

- The student is able to understand and critically analyze the methodology and statistics used in a research report in the research domain of physical education and movement sciences.

- The student has insight in the basic principles of descriptive and inferential statistics.

- The student is able to describe and explain (the use of) simple quantitative statistical methods and significance tests.

- The student is able to independently formulate research questions in the research domain of physical education and movement sciences based on a complex data file.

- The student is able to select and apply the appropriate statistical technique using statistical software (SPSS) to answer a research question in the research domain of physical education and movement sciences.

- The student is able to interpret, evaluate and report the results of the statistical analyses and, as such, to answer research questions in the field of physical education and movement sciences.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Practical Exam determines 50% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen Theorie with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen Praktijk with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The Theoretical Exam (HOCs) concerns a written exam covering the content of the entire course, including both knowledge questions and theoretical exercises.

The Practical Exam (WPOs) concerns an exam where research questions are formulated on the basis of short cases that need to be resolved using statistical SPSS software. Both the process and results of the statistical analyses as well as the associated interpretations need to be reported in writing.

For both parts there is no possibility of a further oral examination.

[ATTENTION:] Absence from a mandatory part of the evaluation leads to an ‘absent’ as a result code.

[ATTENTION:] To pass this course, a minimum of 10/20 for both the Theoretical Exam and the Practical Exam is required! In case of an insufficient mark on one or more examination parts, the lowest of both subscores will be used as the final score instead of the weighted average. The partial result of an examination part, with at least a subscore of 10/20, will be automatically transferred to the 2nd term exam period. A student cannot refrain from this automatic transfer of the partial result. Partial results or subscores are NOT transferred to a following academic year.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
