Course Content

The course on the History and Theories of European Integration provides an overview of the main political, social and economic events that have shaped the unprecedented process of integration in Europe since the Second World War. In this course, we will examine the sources, provisions and effects of the successive treaties that paved the way for greater integration between European countries and look at the progressive enlargement of this process to new member states over the years. In addition, we will discuss the major theories that have attempted to explain the sources of European integration, the impact of recent crises on the European Union and its member states as well as the future trajectory of European integration.

The course consists of the six following modules:

  • Module 1. From an ideal to a concrete reality: the beginnings of European integration (1945-1957)
  • Module 2. From Rome to the single market: growth and paralysis of the European communities (1958-1986)
  • Module 3. From Maastricht to Lisbon: towards a European Union (1987-2009)
  • Module 4. Theories of European integration: an overview
  • Module 5. Europe's polycrisis: the European Union in challenging times (2010s-2020s)
  • Module 6. The future of European integration

The duration of the course is 12 weeks.
