Course Content

The course on EU Institutions provides a comprehensive overview on the history, nature, powers and roles of the various institutions that make up the European Union. Throughout this course, we will thus first look at the EU institutional architecture in broad terms to then zoom in on the most important EU institutions, namely the European Commission, the European Council, the Council of the EU, the European Parliament and the Court of Justice of the EU, to finally conclude with an overview of the other institutions, bodies and agencies that exist within the EU framework, such as the European Central Bank, the Court of Auditors, the European Economic and Social Committee or yet the European Committee of the Regions.

The course consists of the six following modules:

Module 1: The EU institutional architecture: an overview

Module 2: The European Commission

Module 3: The European Council and the Council of the EU

Module 4: The European Parliament

Module 5: The Court of Justice of the EU

Module 6: Other EU institutions, bodies and agencies

The duration of the course is 12 weeks.

Algemene competenties

After completing this module, students should be able to:

  • Explain the history, nature, powers and roles of the different EU institutions;
  • Be able to situate the different EU institutions in relation to each other in the context of EU decision-making processes.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 50% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oral Exam with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Assignments with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Each of the six modules comprises a lecture and reading materials. The students are given two weeks to finalise each module. Two separate assignments, counting in total for 50% of the final grade, will take place during this six modules. Upon the end of the six modules, the students take a final oral exam, that counts for the remaining 50%. The final exam takes place online.
