Course Content

These laboratory exercises are organized to introduce the students to practical techniques used in organic chemistry. The exercises consist of different sessions that allow the students to get acquainted with the basic handlings of organic synthesis (e.g. preparing set-ups for specific reactions, working under dry (moisture and water-free) conditions, distillation, crystallization, trituration, (vacuum)filtration, evaporation, etc.). These sessions are preceded by an introductory course on the applied techniques and related safety aspects.

Examples of these sessions are:

* the synthesis of-butylchloride (nucleophilic substitution)

* the nitration of bromobenzene (electrophilic aromatic substitution)

* the synthesis of a dehydroamino acid (elimination reaction)

* the bromination of E-stilbene (addition reaction)

* an esterification (nucleophilic acyl substitution)

The evaluation consists of a permanent evaluation during the laboratory work and of an evaluation of the reports (written reports). The laboratory exercises are compulsory. For the permanent evaluation of the practicals, the following categories and attitudes are quoted: reports, answer to questions during the exercises, preparation, performance in the laboratory, including correct experimental setup, cleanliness and organisation. Students who are illegitimately absent cannot retake the practical exercises and are quoted pro rata the amount of missed exercises. Students who were illegitimately absent on two practical sessions are excluded from the exam. There is no possibility to redo the practical exercises in the 2nd examination session (August/September).

The theoretical aspects of the performed reactions can be found in the course "Organische Chemie: Reactiviteit" (Prof S. Ballet and Prof. G. Verniest), which is taught in parallel to these sessions.

Course material
Practical course material (Required) : Beschrijving van de proeven en de nodige veiligheidsaspecten
Additional info

The practical sessions are compulsory. Absence or late show up for a practical sessions results in a fail for this part of the WPO (is calculated pro rata in the final score).

Learning Outcomes

General Competencies

Herein, the bachelor goal to introduce the students to the main domains of chemistry is of application with regards to organic chemistry.

This course allows to student to acquire insight and knowledge of reactivity in organic compounds, via the practical execution of a number of experiments.

The theoretical background on reactivity is presented in detail during the lectures and exercise sessions of the course "Organische Chemie: Reactiviteit" (S. Ballet en G. Verniest).

The final competences are: i) acquisition of knowledge on the different techniques used in a laboratory of organic chemistry, ii) proper and correct reporting of performed reactions.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
PRAC Practical Assignment determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Execution & reports of lab ex with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The evaluation takes place continuously and accounts for the full final score

During this evaluation the aquired skills, insights, dedication and the laboratory reports are taken into consideration.

Reports that are handed in after the submission deadline are not considered for evaluation and will not be scored.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
