Course Content
This course introduces some essential engineering skills. The course consists of:
  • Part scheduling and exam skills
  • Part engineering project: The student designs and implements individually a digital apparatus (alarm clock, thermometer, or similar), using skills taught during Basic electronics and Informatics. The project entails:
    • Introduction to analysis of experimental data (including measurement error and error propagation)
    • Introduction to rapid prototyping
      • CAD
      • laser cutting
      • 3D printing
      • PCB etching
      • programming of a microcontroller (Arduino)
    • Design and manufacturing of a digital aparatus
      • digital and analog elementary components
      • electronic control elements
      • introduction to 'schematic capture' and 'Printed Circuit Board' design
      • sintering and cabling techniques
      • programming microcontrollers
  • Part language: language test and guidance. A mandatory Dutch language test is organised.
    • If your score is <12/20, you will be assigned to follow the STAN-trajectory (Stimulans Academisch Nederlands) via ACTO
    • If your score is 12/20 or more, you will be assigned to independently complete a number of modules on the platform Universiteitstaal

Leerresultaten

BaLO_1 To possess in-depth, application-oriented knowledge, understanding and practical skills related to mathematics and science, directed towards engineering applications.
BaLO_3 To solve practical engineering problems from an understanding of the basic theory and from an understanding of basic methods for the schematisation and modelling of processes or systems.
BaLO_4 Implementation-oriented and analytical problem-solving, design, development and creative innovation with a focus on the operational implications of the specific case.
BaLO_6 Based on acquired insight, to select the appropriate methods of research, design and solution and appropriately apply the results in a scientific and effective manner.
BaLO_8 To demonstrate a research attitude: accuracy, critical reflection, scientific and technical curiosity, justification of choices.
BaLO_9 To demonstrate an engineering attitude: attention to planning, to technical, economic and societal factors as well as managerial implications, assessment of the risks and feasibility of the proposed approach or solution, being result-driven and achieving effective solutions, innovative thinking.
BaLO_10 To correctly handle the scientific and discipline-specific terminology in language relevant to the programme.
BaLO_11 To present and communicate the results of technical and scientific work, in writing, orally and visually.
BaLO_13 To act in an ethical and socially responsible manner with attention to technical, economic, human and sustainability aspects.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Other Exam with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

    Note: Exam time 1st session:
Dutch language test plus STAN-trajectory or modules from Universiteitstaal: timely-announced tests during the year: 20% (immediately transferred to 2nd session)
Part engineering project: evaluation of developed product: 80% (transferred to 2nd session if 10/20 or more)
    Exam time 2nd session:
Dutch language test plus STAN-trajectory or modules from Universiteitstaal: timely-announced tests during the year: 20% (immediately transferred from the 1st session)
Part alarm clock project: evaluation of developed product: 80%

If a score of less than 8 / 20 is obtained on one of the parts of the course (except for the language test), then the lowest score will be the final score for the course.

Not observing the laboratory regulations during the preparation, execution and/or reporting of the practicum, may result in a zero for the considered practicum.

Additional info regarding evaluation

An illegitimate absence of more than 25 % at the laboratory practicals leads to an absent quotation for the laboratory practicals. The sanctions taken in the first exam session are transferred to the second exam session.

For every part with practical exercise sessions (part engineering project, part planning and exam skills), an illegitimate absence of more than 25 % for the practical exercise sessions leads to a refusal to participate the practical exercises exam and/or the test (whichever is applicable). This leads to an absent quotation for the related part. The sanctions taken in the first exam session are transferred to the second exam session.

The part engineering project entails an introduction to rapid protoyping. The student is expected to independently (using tutorials) learn how to work with the rapid prototyping machines (3D printing, laser cutting, PCB etching) and with Arduino. The student needs to show that the tutorials have been successfully completed at the start of the second semester. If this is not so, the student will not be allowed to participate in the WPOs of the alarm clock project in the second semester.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
