Course Content

The main objective of this course is to familiarise students with different technologies used in professional translation contexts, such as translation project management systems, computer-aided translation tools, automatic terminology extraction tools or machine translation systems. In addition, students gain more insight into how the translation industry looks at the latest technologies and technological developments so that they can form their own critical opinion about these topics.

This course is also designed to help students (further) develop specific technological knowledge and skills. This will improve their ability to use, test and evaluate technologies for translators in a thorough and systematic way from an end-user perspective.

Through various exercises and assignments, students will form a critical opinion about the possibilities and limitations of specific technological tools in a professional translation context. In this way, they will be able to determine for themselves which systems can be used efficiently for specific translation projects.

Finally, the course will also focus on software localisation - i.e. the process of translating user interfaces (UIs) of software systems (desktop software, web tools or mobile apps) - and the translator's role in this process. Students gain insights into the localisation process and into the knowledge and skills that translators (or 'localisation experts') need to have in order to work in this sector.

Learning outcomes

  • The student has acquired knowledge about technological developments and tools in the translation industry and is able to critically reflect on these topics.
  • The student has acquired knowledge about scientific approaches, methods and standards for functional analysis, measurement, testing and evaluation of technologies for translators. Based on this knowledge, the student is able to make informed choices about whether or not to use certain technological tools in a translation project.
  • The student adopts the right knowledge- and research-based attitudes towards translation technology in all its aspects.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
SELF Report determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Report category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Portfolio with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The portfolio will be made up of various assignments that students have to complete during the semester, either individually or as part of a team (of max. three students). Each assignment is subject to specific evaluation criteria which will be communicated during the lectures.

In the second examination period, the evaluation mark will also be based on a portfolio assignment.
