Course Content

The course discusses the components of smart ICT systems and introduces the basics of learning agorithms.

Lecture:

- Introduction to the landscape of building intelligen systems

- Linear Regression

- State space search

- Decision trees and random forests.

- Support Vector Machines

- Neural Networks and backpropagation

- Reinforcement Learning: Q-learning introduction

- A quick overview of current "hot topics", e.g. deep learning

Practical exercises:

In the practical exercise sessions students solve problems under supervision. The selected problems are a direct application of knowledge and concepts gained in the lectures.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
SELF Practical Assignment determines 50% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oral exam with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

    Note: Exam time 1st session:
Lecture: oral exam with written preparation: 50% of the final mark (transferred to 2nd session if 10/20 or more).

    Exam time 2nd session:
Lecture: oral exam with written preparation: 50% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Individual assignment with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

    Note: Exam time 1st session:
Individual Assignment, 50% of the final mark (transferred to 2nd session if 10/20 or more).

    Exam time 2nd session:
Individual Assignment: 50% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

An illegitimate absence of more than 25 % for the practical exercise sessions leads to a refusal to participate in the practical exercises exam. This leads to an absent quotation for the related exam. The sanctions taken in the first exam session are transferred to the second exam session.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
