Course Content

Lecture:
This course includes an introduction to the basic concepts of probability and statistics. The intention is not to provide an extensive theoretical structure. Contrary, a practical useful knowledge is offered, so that students (and future engineers) can apply the statistical methodes and techniques to their engineering problems.

  • Statistics, data and statistical thinking
  • Methods for describing the data collections
  • Probability
  • Discrete random variables
  • Continuous random variables
  • Distributions of random variables
  • Conclusions based on a single sample: Estimating with confidence intervals
  • Statistical conclusions based on a single sample : Testing a hypothesis
  • Conclusions based on two samples: Confidence intervals and hypothesis testing
  • Simple linear regression

The courses will be organised following the flipped classroom principle:
1. All lectures are available as a video recording on Canvas.
2. The students watch the video recordings in advance, according to the instructions in the learning guide.
3. During joint sessions, the subject matter is discussed and, where necessary, further explained or expanded upon.

Practical exercises:
During the practical exercise sessions, the students solve in an online learning environment problems of a direct application of the concepts and methods learned in the lecture.

Learning Outcomes

Learning outcomes

  • BaLO_1 To possess in-depth, application-oriented knowledge, understanding and practical skills related to mathematics and science, directed towards engineering applications.
  • BaLO_3 To solve practical engineering problems from an understanding of the basic theory and from an understanding of basic methods for the schematisation and modelling of processes or systems.
  • BaLO_6 Based on acquired insight, to select the appropriate methods of research, design and solution and appropriately apply the results in a scientific and effective manner.
  • BaLO_8 To demonstrate a research attitude: accuracy, critical reflection, scientific and technical curiosity, justification of choices.
  • BaLO_9 To demonstrate an engineering attitude: attention to planning, to technical, economic and societal factors as well as managerial implications, assessment of the risks and feasibility of the proposed approach or solution, being result-driven and achieving effective solutions, innovative thinking.
  • BaLO_10 To correctly handle the scientific and discipline-specific terminology in language relevant to the programme.
  • BaLO_11 To present and communicate the results of technical and scientific work, in writing, orally and visually.
  • BaLO_13 To act in an ethical and socially responsible manner with attention to technical, economic, human and sustainability aspects.

Objectives

D1: can describe data using appropriate graphs and indicators (BaLO 1, 6, 8, 11)
D2: can perform combinatorics and probability theory (BaLO 1)
D3: knows the most important discrete and continuous random variables and can apply them (BaLO 1)
D4: can define and interpret the confidence intervals for mean, variance, and fraction (BaLO 1, 6, 8)

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Exam Other with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

    Note: Exam time 1st session:
Lecture and practical exercises: written exam: 70% (not transferred to 2nd session)
Evaluation exercises and tasks: 30% (transferred to 2nd session if 10/20 or more)
    Exam time 2nd session:
Lecture and practical exercises: written exam: 70% or 100% (if points of exercises/tasks is not carried over to 2nd session)
