Course Content

This course follows up on ‘Introductory statistics in movement sciences’ (3 BALO) and aims to further develop students’ general research skills in preparation for the independent analysis, interpretation and reporting of collected data (a.o. in the context of the subsequent Master's thesis). Through a combination of lectures (HOCs) and immediately following practical exercises (WPOs), this course includes a further in depth study of more advanced quantitative statistical techniques with special attention for multifactorial and multivariate analysis methods. The students learn to independently execute both previously acquired techniques and these more complex statistical analyses on more extensive fictitious data sets using SPSS as statistical processing program, including a brief explanation of the use of syntax. All examples and practical exercises in this course are applied to the field of physical education, movement and sport sciences.

Additional info

Presence in the lectures (HOCs) and practical exercises (WPOs) is not a requirement to be admitted to the exam, but it is recommended in view of understanding and processing the subject matter.

Learning Outcomes

General learning outcomes

- The student is able to understand and critically analyze the methodology and statistics used in a research report in the research domain of physical education, movement and sport sciences.

- The student is able to describe and explain (the use of) more complex and advanced quantitative statistical techniques.

- The student is able to independently formulate research questions in the research domain of physical education, movement and sport sciences based on a more extensive data file.

- The student is able to select and apply the appropriate statistical technique using statistical software (SPSS), linked to ICT-literacy, to answer a more complex research question in the research domain of physical education, movement and sport sciences.

- The student is able to interpret, evaluate and report the results of more advanced statistical analyses and, as such, to answer complex research questions in the field of physical education, movement and sport sciences.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Toegepast Examen with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The Applied Exam (HOCs & WPOs) concerns an exam where research questions are formulated on the basis of a more extensive and complex data file that need to be resolved using statistical SPSS software. Both the process and results of the statistical analyses as well as the associated interpretations need to be reported in writing.

There is no possibility of a further oral examination.

[ATTENTION:] Absence from this mandatory part of the evaluation leads to an ‘absent’ as a result code.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
