8 ECTS credits
200 h study time
Offer 1 with catalog number 4018689FNR for all students in the 1st and 2nd semester at a (F) Master - specialised level.
This course represents the continuation of the student’s active participation in the same ongoing research project (with the same mentor/supervisor) as in the 1st part of the Research internship in Physical Activity, Fitness and Health.
In addition to the personal tasks related to the execution of research activities in the context of the specific project and the (further) development of associated academic competences, each student has to develop a new and detailed substantive research proposal in the field of PAFH (in ENG). Students will also further finetune their A1 article draft (see Part I) for submission to an international scientific journal, and will go through the corresponding revision process. In the lectures (HOCs), spread over the 1st and 2nd semester, the necessary background information is provided to complete these tasks.
In the context of student follow-up, group sessions (incl. peer feedback) will also be scheduled. In addition, individual feedback session (N=2) with the internship coordinator are scheduled.
The students are required to re-attend the 'VBSW symposium' of the Flemish Society for Movement and Sport Sciences) this academic year in order to contribute individually with a poster presentation on the research conducted in the context of their own internship. Again, students are required to actively participate in networking moments and question rounds.
Finally, the students are required to attend at least 1 domestic or foreign PhD defence within the field of PAFH during the academic year. In addition, they will also be systematically invited (without obligation) to participate in the activities organized by the VUB Research Group MOVE and the UGent-VUB Alliance Research Group PANU.
Presence at all scheduled contact hours as well as attending at least one PhD defence and presenting at the VBSW symposium is MANDATORY. In case of a legitimate absence and/or a study period abroad, a suitable (inter)national alternative for this conference will be sought in consultation with the lecturer.
The topic of the ongoing research project, in which the student participates for the internship, is the same as during Part I (with the same mentor/promotor) and must be sufficiently different from the topic examined in the context of the Master’s thesis! It is possible that the supervisor of the actual research internship requests that the individual student is also registered for or has passed additional courses (besides the aforementioned enrolment requirements) in view of the specific research project(‘s content and required expertise).
Since English is the international main language in scientific research, a good knowledge and mastery thereof is recommended. Accordingly, some of the lectures will be taught in English.
In order to take this class, the following compulsory additional costs will be charged: printing a poster (estimated contribution of 7,5€) and attending the VBSW symposium (estimated contribution of 25€). These costs are borne by the student and can neither be passed on to fellow students nor recovered from the lecturer or faculty. The amounts stated are approximately correct. If you experience payment difficulties as a result of these additional costs, you can contact Student Social Services. More info on https://student.vub.be/en/social-service#financial-support.
- During their internship, the students are actively introduced to the essential aspects of scientific research as it is conducted within academic institutions at the national and international level.
- The students work more independently on the predefined academic competences (specific to the research project) and are able to present their research to a broad (international) audience.
- The students are able to function well in a(n international) research team.
- The students can develop a new substantive research proposal in the international field of PAFH research (according to some predefined guidelines, in ENG).
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.
Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
The assessment of this course consists of 3 examination parts:
- Assessment of the detailed research proposal (in ENG) by the coordinator of the research internship based on predefined criteria [= product evaluation].
- Assessment of the E-portfolio to be maintained by the student (via OneDrive, Office 365), in which acquired research competencies are demonstrated, research activities are reported, realistic schedules are made and self-critical reflection reports are posted, and this in combination with a final assessment form to be completed by the mentor/promotor of the research internship [= process evaluation].
- Assessment based on 2 periodic and individual feedback sessions with the coordinator about substantive and practical aspects of the research internship and the associated learning process (to honor relative progress, commitment and scientific attitude) [= process evaluation].
[ATTENTION:] Absence from a mandatory part of the evaluation leads to an ‘absent’ as a result code.
[ATTENTION:] If a student is more than 2 times absent during the mandatory contact moments and/or cannot provide proof of a scientific conference contribution and of attending a PhD defence, he/she will not be allowed to take part in the exams of both the 1st and 2nd term and will receive 0/20 as result code (= final score) for both exam sessions. In case of a legitimate absence, the student must submit proof of this to the faculty secretariat and contact the lecturer within a week of the compulsory lesson at hand to arrange a catch-up session. Students with a top sport statute may deviate from the attendance obligation in consultation with the Top Sport and Study service, that coordinates to find an appropriate alternative at the start of each semester.
[ATTENTION:] To pass this course, a minimum of 10/20 for each examination part (N=3) is required! In case of an insufficient mark on one or more examination parts, the lowest subscore will be used as the final score instead of the weighted average. The partial result of an examination part, with at least a subscore of 10/20, will be automatically transferred to the 2nd term exam period. If the course needs to be retaken, the partial result of an examination part, with at least a subscore of 10/20, will also be automatically transferred to the following academic year. A student cannot refrain from this automatic transfer(s) of the partial result.
