Course Content

There is a general belief in the good of sports, which almost 'naturally' leads to the use of sports as an answer to a number of personal and social issues.
Besides physical fitness and improved health, the proclaimed potential benefits of participation in sports are improved mental health and psychological well-being (leading to reduction of anxiety and stress), personality development (via improved self-concept, physical and global self-esteem/confidence, self-confidence and increased locus of control), socio-psychological benefits (such as empathy, integrity, tolerance, cooperation, trustworthiness and the development of social skills) and broader sociological impacts (such as increased community identity, social coherence and integration).
However there is a growing awareness that more knowledge and expertise is needed to raise the alleged social potential of sports. This module aims at providing the student more insights in sport’s wider role, and how such a wider role can be conceptualized, operationalized and evaluated.

Additional info

The module is built around three major parts:
-       Lectures and interactive sessions in which students receive theoretical framework.
-       Inspiring practical sessions with guest speakers, an active workshop and a study visit, which will bring the student (interactively) into contact with existing sports initiatives that are aiming at broader social outcomes through sport.
-       An assignment in which the student in collaboration with some other students in group will have to develop an analytical logic model for one of the organisations that was presented.

Besides, this module includes also a debate, an international guest speaker and some small interim assignments.

This module is offered as an ‘intensive week’. Afterwards the groups will work autonomously and will have a regular times meetings with the teacher and/or assistent. At the end of the semester the groups will present their trajectory and the results regarding the assignment. This course expects a high degree of autonomy..

This module requires 100% compulsory attendance during the intensive week and during the presentations at the end of the semester.

  • Praktijkopdracht with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation
The assessment consists of the following assignment categories:

The group work, presentation and questions - of the teaching team and fellow students - linked to the group work on the day of the exam determine 50% of the final mark.

The evaluation by the organization concerned has a weighting factor of 25 and thus determines 25% of the total final mark.

The evaluation of fellow students within their own workgroup (via peer assessment in canvas) has a weighting factor of 25 and thus determines 25% of the total final mark.

Additional info regarding the evaluation

The total score of the student in the work group is not necessarily the same for all group members. The individual grade depends on a correction by peer evaluation.

The student must have participated in all parts of the exam - if not, he / she will receive an "absent" on the score sheet.
