Course Content

During the HPM-course, ‘performance management’ and elite sport are approached from three perspectives. The macro-level concerns the commercial, political and social and cultural factors that have an impact on the management of elite sport. The mesolevel is concerned with measuring performance and success, the management of elite sport policy, a comparison of elite sport policies, quality and performance management of sport organisations and the governance of elite sport. At the microlevel the athletic and post-athletic career of athletes is approached from a holistic perspective, as well as the support services for elite athletes, coaches and the elite sport team. Finally, attention is paid to the environment of elite sport, such as increased commercialization, globalization, risk management and drugs.

The HPM course is taught during one intensive week (and one lesson before and after) whereby 100% attendance is obliged. During this week some themes are taught, based on the latest international research, others are offered by the guided literature (see study material).

Furthermore, students make a group ‘elite sport project’, that should enable them to critically analyse one of the themes in HPM. In this project, they (either) have to analyse and interpret the organizational/governance development of elite sport, (either) the individual development of an elite athlete, by working on a case study around an agreed theme.

Take into account that, if required, this course can be taught as a combination of both distance and face-to-face (on campus) education.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Attendance during the intensive week is compulsory. In case of justified absence (e.g. Erasmus, Elite sport students, illness), students get a self-study/adapted task in agreement with the teacher. Students get a specific task, based on the handbook. In this case, the student contacts the teacher to follow up before the start of the intensive course.

The evaluation consists of:

  1. During the intensive course, the students will give a presentation to each other on a theme on which they have read the literature from the book on HPM (peer assessment).

Students with no justified absence during the full intensive course, cannot participate to the exam in the first and second exams and get a score of 0/20 on both exams.

  1. Furthermore, students work on their HPM elite sport project. They develop a case study, where they show to be able to give a critical view on a topic, to analyse and plan strategically, in regard to policy aims or guidance. They interpret different perspectives and contexts of either organizational developments or governance, either individual development of an elite athlete. This will result in (a) a literature overview (developed individually) and (c) case study as a group work, that they present orally.

The total score is divided as follows:

  • Peer assessment presentation 20%
  • the literature study (40% of the final mark)
  • and the written casestudy (50% of the final mark).

Second exam: If the student did not succeed for the first exam, it is possible to hand over partial scores; In the second exam, the student will for the part that scored insufficiently:

  • a new presentation, given for the teachers, based on a chapter from the handbook
  • a written case study (WPO), building further on a theme of the first phase case study.

h agreement of the professor responsible for this course, to be allowed to the exam by way of self study and/or an assignment. The student needs to contact the professor responsible for this course before the start of the intensive course.

(1) During the intensive course, the students will give a presentation to each other on a theme on which they have read the literature from the required handbook (peer assessment).

(2) By way of a HPM elite sport project students will need to develop and critically approach a case study on a self-determined topic with regard to HPM, to analize it and to develop a strategicplan aimed at policy aims or guidance. At the same time, they will have to give an interpretation to different perspectives and contexts of  organizational developments or governance or of the individual development of an elite athlete. This needs to result in (a) a literature overview and (b) a case study which has to be submitted individually.

The final mark for this course will consist of:

(a) (a)   Peer assessment presentation 20%

(b) the literature study (40% of the final mark)

and (c) the written casestudy (50% of the final mark).

If the student does not succeed for the first exam, it is possible to transfer partial marks to the next exam within the same academic year. For this second exam, the student will have to submit an extensive written casestudy which builds upon the topic of the first casestudy.

Take into account that, if required, the evaluation of this course can be done face-to-face (on campus) or in distance (online) or by a combination of both.
