This is an upper intermediate-level English course, geared to an academic setting. The course aims to:
- develop the skills needed to follow a university-level course taught in English
- make participants aware of the features characteristic of academic register in English, with a particular emphasis on vocabulary
- allow participants to apply their knowledge of academic register through the task of summary/abstract writing
- refresh key grammar points
- give participants the opportunity to develp their presentation skills in English
Students who have already passed Academic English 5 cannot take this course.
Course material is made available throughout the semester via Canvas. Attendance in class is not compulsory for this course, but highly recommended.
Please note that in order to register for this course students must:
EITHER
a) have successfully completed the course Academic English I
OR
b) have taken the ACTO English placement test, and obtained a result in the appropriate range for this course. If your result is not in the appropriate range, it is not possible for you to register for this course, even if it is offered as part of your study programme.

- The student demonstrates knowledge and accurate application of the rules of English grammar concerning a range of different topics.
- The student is familiar with academic vocabulary for a range of topics and can apply this in both controlled exercises and their own academic texts, both spoken and written.
- The student can deliver a clear, concise and well-structured academic presentation on a topic with which they are familiar.
- The student is capable of independently producing a clear, concise and well-structured written summary of the key information from an Anglophone text.
- The student is capable of independently producing a clear, concise and well-structured written abstract to their own academic presentation.
- The student demonstrates an awareness and command of certain key language skills required in an academic context, such as adapting a suitable register and paraphrasing the ideas of others in their own words, with appropriate reference to the original source where appropriate.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 20% of the final mark.
SELF Presentation determines 25% of the final mark.
SELF Practical Assignment determines 40% of the final mark.
Other determines 15% of the final mark.
