Examination method

For each session, the different chapters/papers (with the exception of the ‘additional readings’) will be read in advance by all students. Further assessment is based on the writing and presentation of a 4000w individual paper in which the student draws on the required and additional literature to critically analyse and discuss contemporary economic geographical processes or policies in Belgium or elsewhere. The paper is evaluated on how it scores in terms of originality, structure, reference to the literature, and a critical engagement with media and policy documents. Students are also expected to present their paper via a powerpoint presentation in a dedicated session. The paper itself accounts for 70% of the final grade; the presentation of the paper accounts for 30%. Both elements are required to be able to pass the exam.

Participation in seminars is obligatory. Non-participation will exclude the student from handing in the paper and participating in the paper presentation session. In case the absence is motivated (e.g. medical proof), the lecturers need to be contacted as soon as possible.

Partial marks for the presentation and paper, if the student obtains at least half of the score each part, are transferred to the second session and to the next academic year. Students may not relinquish partial marks.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
