Inhoud

The Advanced Materials course focuses on the development and application of modern materials and innovative material concepts, such as, but not limited to, nanocomposites, materials for (organic) solar cells, and self-healing materials.

For the different topics, two major story lines will unfold:

- How do the chemical structure of the material, the microstructure formed, and the processing of the material influence the final material properties?

- How can we study the materials, to get insight into the structure-processing-property relations and into the design of materials with a higher performance? Attention is paid to what is feasible in an industrial environment and how different techniques could be used for process monitoring, quality control, or R&D.

The course aims at giving the student a better understanding of advanced materials’ research in academia and industry and insight in recent developments in this field.

Together with the forming of metals course, company visits are organised. Until 2018-2019, these 3-day visits were organised every other year. However, as the group of students is gradually growing, we might adapt this to shorter, yearly visits.

Bijkomende info

Students are obliged to participate in invited seminars and industry visits (only in years in which they are organised, 100% attendance is obliged).

In case of an absence for valid reasons and pending approval by the primary instructor:

- the student needs to contact the primary instructor and his assistant personally to make the necessary arrangements for catching up his absence,

- the sessions missed may be replaced by a task (25% of total score), which must be completed and handed-in before the end of the start of the exam session of the semester the course is taught in,

- if the student does not pass overall, but gets a mark of 10 or more on the task, it is possible to move these points from the first to the second exam session, within the same academic year.

- Medical proofs need to be handed-in to the secretariat of the VUB Faculty of Engineering.

If absent without a valid reason, the student will be refused for participation in the exam.
