Course Content

Advanced studies in algology part 1 will take place during the first semester. Students will follow different courses, seminars and practical demonstrations during 1 week at a location that is located off campus. An extensive self-study after the course week is necessary.

The student delivers a certificate of 80% attendancy (in hours) during the contact hours. If the % of attendancy is lower than 80% the student can not participate to the exam.

During the examination period the student can be examined about his obtained attitudes, knowledge, skills by a multiple choice examination.

There will be guessing correction.

In order to pass this course unit at least 50% of the questions will need to be answered correctly.

The evaluation will take place in June of the first course year.

The exam will be on 25 points, but will be converted to an examination mark on 20 points.

Learning Outcomes

General comptences

Introductory framework, primarily students should:




  1. be able to identify patients with pain and measure pain


  2. learn to understand a patient's pain and all its implications for the patient's quality of life


  3. know and apply the methods of analgesia which offer effective pain control for the majority of patients and to classify those in a graded scheme


  4. be able to evaluate the effectiveness of particular pain management strategies


  5. know and be able to apply the indications for appropriate psychotherapeutic treatment for pain


In particular in depth knowledge, skills and attitudes are manditory to become a complete pain physician. Therefore the student should:




  1. get insight in the scientific knowledge in the neurobiology and neurochemistry of the nociceptive system, including cognitive modulation of the emotional experiences of pain


  2. be able to differentiate between and know the basic and advanced treatment principles of the major clinical pain syndromes: acute post-traumatic and post-operative pain, cancer pain, neuropathic pain and chronic non-cancer pain.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • written exam with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.
