The bachelor research training is an extension of the bachelor's thesis, but is nevertheless a clearly separated entitty that is therefore evaluated separately as well. The research training is useful in the following cases when the student's academic background is insufficient to address the subject of the bachelor thesis directly:
The assignments will clearly indicate whether a research training is recommended when the topics are presented to the students at the beginning of the academic year.
In the case a research training is recommended, the student is strongly advised to choose this study component so that he or she receives adequate guidance and, after successful completion, can redeem the time spent in the form of 3 credits.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.
Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
The appointed coordinators of the courses "Bachelor Research Training" and "Bachelor Thesis" discuss with the promoter whether the proposed work is sufficiently academic and has required 75 to 90 hours of work from the student. The students must demonstrate that they can work independently in an academic field in preparation for their thesis, and can report on their work. The work should not significantly overlap with other courses.
Students who choose this course must write a paper of upto 25 pages. There is an oral defense based on a presentation (10 minutes followed by 10 minutes questions & feedback). Both parts will be completed in the first term. There is no second term for this course.
The following aspects are evaluated:
1. Content and form of the scientific paper;
2. Oral presentation during the defense;
3. Work done and the attitude of the student during the year.
A weighting percentage is assigned to each category. The percentages and categories are discussed annually in consultation with the students and adjusted where necessary on the opleidingsraad of the Bachelor of Computer Science. The final point may deviate from this weighted sum if there is agreement among the coordinators. This can occur to capture global trends and variations per year or to account for special circumstances.
Feedback from the supervisor / promotor is asked to provide additional clarifcations where needed .
