Course Content
The course deals with the impact of noise. First of all the character of sound as wave with its velocity, frequency and wave length is studied. Then the sound amplitude scale namely dB and derived scales are discussed. The sound perception of human being is also discussed and adapted scales such as phone, sone, Noise Rating and A-weighting are then introduced. Afterwards the correct measurement of sound as well as noise reduction techniques by absorption and isolation are discussed.

Algemene competenties

Aim:
The purpose  of this course is to give the student an insight in basic concepts of building acoustics (basic acoustical quantities, isolation law, absorption of materials, acoustical measurement equipment, standards and norms for insulation of houses).

Competences
- The student has knowledge of the basic quantities of acoustics (dB scale, octaves, impedance, acoustic intensity, etc.) he/she can assess the order of magnitude of these quantities
- The student knows typical values of acoustic insulation and absorption. He/she can calculate these values using simple models/equations.
- The student has knowledge on the regulating norms of the acoustic insulation in housing.
- The student can use typical measurement instrumentation for sound measurement (sonometer, intensity meter, etc.)

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 75% of the final mark.
PRAC Report determines 25% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oral exam closed book with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 75% of the final mark.

    Note: De student beantwoord twee open vragen om de kennis over de cursus aan te tonen.
    Er is twintig minuten voorbereidingstijd voorzien waarbij de student schriftelijk een antwoord op de vraag kan formuleren (gesloten boek). Deze voorbereiding mag gebruikt worden op het examen.

Within the PRAC Report category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Lab Reports with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 25% of the final mark.

    Note: Van elk labo wordt een verslag opgemaakt (met een duidelijke formulering van de probleemstelling, doelstelling, meetmethodes, meetresultaten en een besluit).

Additional info regarding evaluation

The student has to answer 2 open questions.  The questions are prepared - without course notes -  and answered orally afterwards.

75% of the marks = oral exam
25% of the marks = lab report

For the evaluation of the lab a report should be submitted (the problem statement, goals, measurement setup, methodology, measurement results and a conclusion should be included).

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
