Course Content

The course will cover:

  • the foundations of sound analysis - critical thinking and effective decision-making;
  • understanding and dealing with uncertainty and complexity;
  • the different types of political risks and the where they are present in the current international environment;
  • an introduction to forecasting principles;
  • preventing strategic surprise and risk mapping;
  • methods of political risk analysis;
  • political risk mitigation.

Learning Outcomes

General Competences

Students will become familiar with the history and evolution of political risk analysis.  They will understand the many types of political risks, the different levels of political risk (global, country, firm/sector), and be able to use different analytic methods to assess and forecast political risks.

Through course readings, class discussions, and the examination of case studies, students will gain a solid understanding of contemporary political risks that challenge governments and businesses.  They will also have a chance to practice applying various analytic methods to contemporary political risk issues in their written assignments and classroom discussions.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Practical Assignment with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Students will complete a “Political Risk Identification Assignment” where they will choose a multinational corporation and identify the global political risks that the company faces in different regions around the world.

Students will also complete a forecasting exercise where they will provide forecasts and brief justifications for their answers (1-2 paragraphs) for 5 questions related to current international events.
