Inhoud

Through a combination of lectures, guided class discussion, and guest lecturers, the course covers:

  • What diplomacy is and isn’t and the uses to which it is put by international actors;
  • How diplomacy relates to other instruments of statecraft (e.g., intelligence, military and economic power, public diplomacy, etc.);
  • The increasingly inter-agency dimensions of diplomacy;
  • Conducting bi-lateral versus multi-lateral diplomacy;
  • Conducting diplomacy with friends versus adversaries;
  • Case studies of different types of negotiations (e.g., arms control; regional conflict resolution; trade negotiations; technical cooperation agreements).

General competences

Students learn an overview of diplomatic practice at three levels: diplomatic history/national grand strategy; conceptual; and operational/practical practitioners’ experience.  They will learn what it is and what it isn’t; how it’s practiced and used; how it relates to other instruments of statecraft, and differences in the way diplomacy is practiced in different contexts, with different types of diplomatic opposite numbers, and in different types of negotiations.
