Lecture:
The Machine Components course is built upon the basic concepts of strength of materials. The basic principles for linear elasticity are reduced to plane elasticity problems and yield criteria are introduced for ductile and brittle materials. Students gain understanding of some essential aspects that may affect the design and analysis of machine components such as fatigue, stress concentrations and cracks. The selection and the calculation of the most common machine elements, including the various types of connections, are treated in detail. More complex problems are analysed in practice using computer models. The basic principles of the finite element method are introduced. In the practical exercise sessions students solve problems under supervision. The selected problems are a direct application of knowledge and concepts gained in the lectures.
