Course Content

Lecture:

The Machine Components course is built upon the basic concepts of strength of materials. The basic principles for linear elasticity are reduced to plane elasticity problems and yield criteria are introduced for ductile and brittle materials. Students gain understanding of some essential aspects that may affect the design and analysis of machine components such as fatigue, stress concentrations and cracks. The selection and the calculation of the most common machine elements, including the various types of connections, are treated in detail. More complex problems are analysed in practice using computer models. The basic principles of the finite element method are introduced. In the first part of the course, the following items are treated:

Practical exercises:

In the practical exercise sessions students solve problems under supervision. The selected problems are a direct application of knowledge and concepts gained in the lectures.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Other Exam with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

    Note: Exam time 1st session:
Lecture: oral exam with written preparation: 45% (not transferred to second session)
    Practical exercises:
-written exam: 50% (not transferred to second session)
-permanent evaluation: online modules Canvas: 5% (transferred to second session if 10/20 or more)
    Exam time 2nd session:
Lecture: oral exam with written preparation: 45%
    Practical exercises:
    -written exam: 50%
-permanent evaluation: online modules Canvas: 5%

In case of a quotation less than 7/20 for theory or practical exercises, the lowest number will be the final grade for the entire course.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The students needs to finalize all online exercise modules on canvas before 15/12. These modules are scored by permanent evaluation.
