Course Content

Lectures:

This course discusses some topics in industrial measurement and control systems. The course concentrates on the usage of PLC's  for automation and control. A selection of the topics can be found below

  • Evolution and advantages of automated systems in industrial measurements and control
  • Industrial control via PLC, applied on ladder programming in a Simatic environment
    • The basics of PLC programming: understanding and bulding ladder programs
    • The use of PLC's is more advanced applications such as PID control and dynamic movement control
  • Overview of industrial monotoring/ distributed control systems based on Ethernet, CAN, Fieldbus and PROFINET

The lectures also provide hands-on experience where we realize a number of smaller ladder programs during the sessions. The software that is used in these lectures is the TIA portal software of Siemens. Each student will get a license of this package for the duration of the course.

Labs:

  • In the labs you will build a PLC programming project for the automation of one of the test setups that are provided. This allows to test the code in a real hardware environment.
  • The project is prepared and simulated  in advance by the student in the Siemens environment and is then tested on the real hardware. The project s then submitted before the deadline.

Learning Outcomes

  • MaLO_1 To possess advanced application-specific knowledge, understanding and skills in the specialty with attention to the latest developments in technology.
  • MaLO_2 To possess advanced application-specific understanding of advanced theories and methods for the schematisation and modelling of processes and systems and their use in solving problems within the specialty.
  • MaLO_3 To independently integrate and deepen previously acquired knowledge with a view to the opportunities for innovating practical implementations, whilst being aware of the limits of one's own competencies.
  • MaLO_4 To formulate and analyse complex problems within the specialty, and if necessary reduce them to manageable sub-problems, and to develop implementation-oriented design solutions with attention to the specific context.
  • MaLO_5 To independently conceive an engineering project, to plan and execute at the level of junior researching professional. To perform a literature study and to critically interpret the results following scientific standards and this in view of the opportunities for practical applications.
  • MaLO_6 Starting from the acquired discipline-specific and interdisciplinary insights, to select, adapt or if necessary develop, and adequately apply advanced research, design and solution methods. To scientifically process the results, to motivate the adopted choices  based on application-oriented knowledge and the demands of the business context.
  • MaLO_7 To act from a research attitude: creativity, accuracy, critical reflection, curiosity, justify choices on the basis of solution-oriented arguments.
  • MaLO_8 To design systems, products, services and processes,  with a focus on innovation and operations. To interpolate and experiment in the business context.
  • MaLO_10 To act with an engineering attitude in a  predominantly discipline-specific context: result-driven, with attention to planning and technical, economic and societal boundary conditions such as sustainability, assessment of risks and feasibility of the proposed approach or solution, focus on results and achieving effective solutions, innovative thinking.
  • MaLO_11 To work on a project in a primarily subject-specific context: to set goals, to monitor the goals and progress of the project. To function as a member of an (inter- and multidisciplinary) team, to start to lead, to be a bridge between management and workplace, to operate in an international or intercultural environment.  To report effectively.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Other Exam with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

    Note: Exam time 1st session:
Lecture: oral exam with open book: 70% (transferred to 2nd session if 10/20 or more)
Laboratory practicals: evaluation excercise by assistant: 30% (transferred to 2nd session if 10/20 or more)
    Exam time 2nd session:
Lecture: oral exam with open book: 70%
    Laboratory practicals: extra assignment: 30%

In case of a quotation less than 10/20 for theory or laboratory practicals, that number will be the final grade for the entire course.

Not observing the laboratory regulations during the preparation, execution and/or reporting of the practicum, may result in a zero for the considered practicum.

Additional info regarding evaluation
  • A failure to submit the project on time leads to an absent quotation for the laboratory practicals.
  • The sanctions taken in the first exam session are transferred to the second exam session.
Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
