Course Content

This course covers 'general' pharmacology. Pharmacology is the body of characteristics that are more or less proper to all pharmaca. First, the different routes of intake are discussed, as well as the biotransport of medicines. This is followed by a discussion of the processes underlying the absorption, distribution and excretion of medicines. Together with the dose, these processes determine the size and the time course of the concentration of pharmacon molecules at their points of impact, and thus the intensity and the duration of the pharmacological effect. These aspects are discussed in the "Pharmacokinetics" chapter. This chapter discusses the interaction of pharmaca and their points of impact, in other words the way in which they produced their effects. In addition, it examines various factors which may affect the eventual biological effect of a medicine; special attention will be devoted to the influence of genetic factors ("pharmacogenetics"). The other chapters cover the side-effects and the toxicity of medicines and review how medicines are developed, examined and registered. The practicals consist mainly of pharmacokinetics exercises.

Learning Outcomes

General competences

The aim of this course is to acquire knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of pharmacology, notably of the way in which medicines in general are administered, absorbed, distributed and excreted, the way in which the concentration varies in time after administration (pharmacokinetics) and the way in which medicines produce effects (pharmacodynamics). An understanding of these basis principles is a prerequisite for a proper and rational use of medicines in the treatment of patients.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 70% of the final mark.
Practical Exam determines 30% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • examen theorie with a relative weight of 70 which comprises 70% of the final mark.

Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • praktische oefeningen with a relative weight of 30 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The knowledge of the subject matter taught during the lectures and the practical excercises is assessed during a written examination.

For the final assessment, which is communicated to the Examination Commission, the assessments for theory (70%) and practice (30%) are calculated in function of the study load. If the student has obtained a mark of 7/20 or less on either the theory or the practical exercises, the lowest figure is communicated as the final assessment to the Examination Commission.

The exam consists of open questions and multiple-choice questions. The multiple-choice part will be graded by positive scoring with Higher Cesura. No points will be deducted for wrong answers. On the other hand, scoring by guessing will be included in the final score by increasing the pass mark (= caesura). The caesura for the exam and the exact conversion table will be communicated in time on Canvas and in the exam instructions.
