Course Content

This course focuses on the relation between political actuality and the genre of the novella in the long 19th century. The course discusses the evolution of the genre of the novella and its interaction with the political tensions between revolution and restauration in the German language area during the long 19th century.

Each week the students get a few questions to guide their reading of the texts on the program. Each week they prepare these questions. The course is interactively designed, which means that attendance of the course is obligatory.

The students write a paper of 2000 words focusing on a specific topic in one of the novellas on the program. They use at least one scholarly work in print, to be found in the VUB library, and at least one contribution on a scientific website. They hand in the paper after the Christmas holidays. The papers are individually discussed with the students during the January exam period.

 

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

The students can:

- describe the developments of the genre of the novella in the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century;

- analyse the relation between literature and political developments;

- write a paper making use of research material and in correct German on an advanced level.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 20% of the final mark.
PRAC Paper determines 30% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • oral evaluation with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

    Note: assesses knowledge and insight in the course material; students are given 20 minutes time to prepare their answers. No resources allowed

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • participation with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

    Note: weekly preparation and participation in the seminar

Within the PRAC Paper category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • paper with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

    Note: paper on one of the novellas of the course program

Additional info regarding evaluation

The students have to pass both the oral exam and the paper assignment in order to pass for the course as a whole.
