Course Content

The course focuses on developments in modern German language literature of around 1900 in relation to the development of urban environment and capital cities.

The course presents literature from the period 1880-1920. Literary developments such as naturalism, symbolism, expressionism and dadaism are considered, as is the literature of the "Wiener Moderne". The literary texts are read in their relationship with scientific discourses such as darwinism, psychoanalysis and language philosophy, and societal currents such as "Reformpädagogik" and feminism. The urban context of the capital cities of Berlin and Vienna and other major cities such as Munich is analysed in its relation to these developments.

The course is taught in German.

Additional info

The students are expected to prepare each week the selected texts on the program and to engage in the discussions. They are given questions in advance, so as to facilitate the preparation and the disussion. Course attendance is therefore necessary.

The students write a paper focusing on a specific topic in one of the texts on the program. They integrate at least two scholarly articles or books. The student can defend the paper during the oral exam. The use of AI is only permitted for linguistic correction, not for generating lines of thought or content. The use of GenAI must be clearly stipulated in a footnote.

General competencies

The students can:

- can formulate their insights into the literary and cultural developments of Modernity and urbanity around 1900;

- can analyse literary texts in relation to scientific and societal discourses;

- can discuss their interpretations of the texts with their peers in correct German at an advanced level;

- can write down their analysis making use of scholarly material.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 20% of the final mark.
SELF Paper determines 30% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Additional info regarding evaluation

The students have to pass both the oral exam and the paper assignment in order to pass for the course as a whole.

In case an activity related to the course is scheduled off campus, attendance of this activity is required.

The defense of the paper during the oral exam can result in an extra point (1/20) if this defense manages to convincingly remedy the lack of clarity.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark

The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
